42 James Street

This project involved the extensive refurbishment of a Victorian terrace building in London’s West-End, adjacent to the iconic Selfridges department store. The client wanted three high-end apartments for short-term lets. Therefore, the property required a complete transformation while respecting the busy city context.

Whistlers began with major structural alterations. They removed the existing chimney breast and replaced all floors. In addition, they replaced the windows and constructed a fourth-floor mansard to maximise space. Next, the team fitted out the interiors with high-spec finishes for each apartment.

The project faced significant logistical challenges. The terrace sits on a one-way street leading toward Oxford Street, fully occupied with retail tenants on the ground floor. Consequently, Whistlers coordinated all deliveries, waste removal, and construction activities to minimise disruption. Meanwhile, strict safety and site management measures protected pedestrians and retail customers throughout the 42-week programme.

Internally, the apartments feature contemporary designs with clean lines and high-quality materials. Furthermore, natural light and clever spatial planning enhance each unit, creating bright, versatile spaces. In addition, careful attention to finishes and fixtures ensures the apartments meet luxury short-term accommodation standards.

Externally, the terrace retained its original character. Sympathetic decoration and detailing ensured the building blends seamlessly with the surrounding streetscape. At the same time, internal spaces feel open, bright, and modern.

Through careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and proactive site management, Whistlers transformed a constrained Victorian terrace into three bespoke apartments. Ultimately, the project demonstrates the company’s ability to deliver high-end residential refurbishments in challenging urban locations while maintaining consideration for neighbours, pedestrians, and the public.
