The St James’s refurbishment involved the extensive upgrade of a Victorian terrace building in London’s West End, adjacent to the iconic Selfridges department store. From the outset, the client required three high-end apartments for short-term lets. Therefore, a full transformation was essential while respecting the busy city context.
To begin with, Whistlers carried out major structural works. The team removed the existing chimney breast and replaced all floors. In addition, they upgraded the windows and constructed a fourth-floor mansard to maximise space. Subsequently, each apartment was fitted with high-spec finishes and contemporary designs. As a result, the apartments now offer bright, versatile, and modern living areas.
The project faced significant logistical challenges. Because the terrace sits on a one-way street leading to Oxford Street, with fully occupied retail tenants on the ground floor, Whistlers carefully coordinated all deliveries, waste removal, and construction activities. Meanwhile, strict safety and site management measures ensured protection for pedestrians, retail customers, and residents throughout the 42-week programme.
Furthermore, each apartment now features clever spatial planning, abundant natural light, and high-quality materials. Bespoke finishes and fixtures were carefully selected to meet luxury short-term accommodation standards. Consequently, the spaces combine practicality with elegance.
Externally, the terrace retained its original character. Sympathetic decoration and detailing allowed the building to blend seamlessly with the surrounding streetscape. At the same time, internal spaces feel open, bright, and modern.
Ultimately, through meticulous planning, skilled craftsmanship, and proactive site management, the St James’s refurbishment transformed a constrained Victorian terrace into three bespoke apartments. Therefore, the project demonstrates Whistlers’ expertise in delivering high-end urban refurbishments that balance architectural ambition, contemporary comfort, and consideration for neighbours and the public.
